GLOUCESTER TREE

Public BBQ

Stumbling upon this towering karri near Pemberton felt like discovering a piece of living history. The Gloucester Tree, all 53 metres of it, once served as a fire lookout – a testament to Australia's ingenious bush management. While the climbing experience has been temporarily suspended for maintenance, the site remains compelling. What struck me most was the thoughtful planning: families needn't feel excluded if heights aren't their forte. The barbecue facilities by the flowing river create a perfect alternative, with ample shade from surrounding trees and clean amenities throughout. Kids particularly enjoy scrambling over the riverside rocks, especially after rain when the valley transforms into a verdant spectacle. The diversity here surprised me – spring brings orchids and native lilies, while woodland birds provide a constant soundtrack. Even without scaling the tree, the 7-kilometre loop walk offers genuine reward, winding through varied terrain with glimpses of what makes this corner of WA special.
